The Many Advantages For Calling 24 Hour Plumber
Having access to a 24 Hour Plumber when something goes wrong, even if it’s the middle of the night, is critical. Plumbers specialize in installation and maintenance of drinking water systems, sewage systems, and drainage systems. Plumbing expenses can be one of the most expensive parts of owning a home.
One of the biggest plumbing problems a homeowner can have is the freezing of their pipes during the winter or when temperatures drop below freezing. When pipes freeze, no water will come from the taps, but even worse, is that when they begin to thaw out, they will likely burst. Burst pipes will not only require the expertise of a plumber, but likely high repair costs as well.
Frozen pipes that begin to thaw out sometimes burst because water expands as it freezes, damaging pipes.
This expansion puts a huge amount of pressure on whatever type of pipe it is in, including metal or plastic pipes. No matter how strong the actual pipes may be, the pressure of the expanding water can cause them to rupture.
Pipes which are exposed to cold temperatures, such as sprinkler pipes, swimming pool pipes, pipes in unfinished basements, and pipes running through unheated or uninsulated spaces, are especially prone to ruptures. Even pipes located inside heated spaces, such us under kitchen cabinets, can break if the water inside them freezes. Early intervention, during warmer weather, is the only way to prevent frozen pipes.
There are many methods that homeowners can use to help reduce the risk of frozen pipes.
Insulation of the pipes is key. Insulation can come in many forms, from simple to more extravagant, such as newspaper wrapped and taped around the pipes, wrapping pipes in foil, insulated pipe sleeves, and heated tape, which is wrapped around exposed pipes then plugged into an electrical outlet.
Once the cold weather hits, there are further prevention methods that homeowners can use to protect themselves further. In general, the water in pipes cannot freeze if they are in use, therefore, leaving all faucets in the house dripped goes a long way in preventing freezing. Other prevention methods include: leaving cabinets open so warm air can reach pipes; keeping homes thermostat set to the same temperature both day and night; and keeping doors and windows shut, keeping warm air inside the home.
Unfortunately, even after going to all of these lengths, sometimes temperatures drop so low that pipes will inevitably freeze.
If a faucet is turned on and only a small trickle of water comes out, the homes pipes are likely frozen, however, homeowners can act quickly to prevent pipes from bursting. Once the suspected frozen pipe is located, it must be slowly warmed up to prevent breakage.
First, the faucet should be turned on to allow room for the expanding water, but contacting a 24 Hour Plumber will ensure this for you. Second, the pipes needs to be heated by either added insulation, or heat applied from a hair dryer, space heater, or other heating method. Lastly, check all other pipes in the home to make sure none of them have frozen as well.
